Tombeau de Lanclos by Gautier, 13-string Guitar - Rob MacKillop

More French repertoire this time, the beautiful Tombeau de Lenclos by Gautier. This guitar is a joy to play, and beautifully put together by Rohan Lowe of Lowe Guitars: www.loweguitars.co.uk It is tuned to the same intervals of a baroque lute, and I'm reading straight from the lute tablature. It was not intended to sound like a baroque lute, it has its own aesthetic and a beautiful tone. More v...
Sor Opus 44 Study 21 with changes - Rob MacKillop, Roudhloff Bros. Guitar

It's fun to make little changes to 19th-century scores, and legitimate too as it was recommended by Aguado at the time. I want to encourage this performance practice. I would only work from a copy of the original score, as there's no point in picking up editors' silent changes (you'd be amazed what some of them get up to). So I always use editions by Tecla.com. I discuss my approach at the end ...

Tombeau de Mouton - and the children and babies (!) of War

OK, I'll admit, this is an odd one. The mood just took me at midnight. I'm sick of all wars. Sick of factions. Tired of Humanity. How long will we keep destroying each other? Until we stop creating divisions: religious, social, race, and countless others. I really don't think we will ever stop killing each other. It's what we do. It's what we've always done. Our past catches up with us every day.
Complete 1st Cello Suite by Bach on Tenor Banjo by Rob MacKillop
Переглядів 3,5 тис.7 місяців тому
Some of you might not play this video because it has Bach's great music on a tenor banjo. As a guitar and lute player, I have to say I have never enjoyed playing Bach's music so much as in the tuning he wrote the music for. Honestly, it's a revelation! It's as if he had the instrument in hand while composing, so well does everything fit under the fingers. We have learned in the last decade that...

Pitch Alert: I sometimes tune my banjo down two steps - a whole tone - to BbFCG, to lower the tension and increase sustain for playing classical music. This happens to correspond with 392 pitch, not 440, and in Bach's day this pitch was quite popular. I think the tenor banjo can do a lot more than Irish and Jazz music, and as the tuning is the same as the cello, albeit at a higher octave - you ...

Love's Farewell by Tobias Hume - Rob MacKillop Guitar in Aquila Low A Tuning

The last of my current batch of videos with the Aquila Low A tuning - where every string is down a 5th from standard. It's is certainly enjoyable, but in small amounts. Tobias Hume was a Scottish viola da gamba player in London at the time of John Dowland, with whom he had a bit of a feud. I've recorded this piece before on a 7-string guitar, but thought it might be interesting to hear it with ...

Mickey Baker Book 2 Lessons 1 to 10 - Rob MacKillop
Hi Rob, I hope to see you uploading new videos. This is a very nice piece, the guitar has a deep sound I like it very much, greetings.
When were these pieces composed?
Does the your book also have music? I'm using a fifth tuned uke to supplement violin practice. I love your books.
Just catching up on your channel again Rob. What a fantastic recital. Nice to hear phrasing so much more evocative than many of the recordings out there 🙏
it feels like sht, especially when you get wet on the fingers
What an interesting sound you've produced, Rob! I don't know whether the major factor here is your playing without fingernails and your unique right hand technique or the Aquila strings. Anyway, the sound is incredibly soft and round and is a wonderful complement to this piece about blossoming youth.
Just bought the book. Love the accompanying video too! Fantastic stuff, thank you!
Класс !!! Спасибо !
The Colascione was practically Rock before Rock was actually a thing.
Sounds great!!!

Buenísimo, siempre pongo atención a esta pieza para apreciar. Veo que la ejecutó con mucha paciencia y éso permitió oírla más hermosa. Muchas gracias
... is-it nylon or metal strung please ?
Porfvor sube mas videos ticando el ukelele suena excelente es un deleite al oido , 🙏gracias
you cannoy play classical guitar without nails. just like you can t build a house barehanded.
1:21 "no nails" trbrrbpprr = Zero control cannot play tremolo. doesnt feel good. cannot play loud without losing control. just let thrm grow for 1 month or so. its required for classical. as segovia proved
Beautiful composition and performance!
I adore this piece. My amazing guitar professor gave me this piece to play this year! I cannot wait to learn it. The way you interpret it is truly inspirational. Sir, you also remind me of my grandpa that passed away about two months ago due to the way you vibe to this beautiful song. Thank you so much for uploading this piece and taking your time to learn it to share it with the world!
Play on the fretboard is really cool way 😊
Glad you like it.
Your singing is singing with so beautiful harmony!👍👍👍
Thank you, pacs. Appreciated! Rob
Здесь особенный строй?
Lovely job watching over my cows, Rob.
Very well done, thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
In Soviet Russia, classical guitar plays you! Oy, what a country.
I came here because GPT informed me you are one of the few on the planet who play without nails.
Not sure what to make of that. I think a Google search might have wielded the same result.
@@RobMacKillop1 Try it, the search give you mass results however, not specific plays who regularly play with out nails. GPT gave me results of performers only. not tutorials, opinions etc.
Absolutely fantastic performance 👏🎸👍congratulations
Rob I just came upon your channel. I'm just in book 1, anywhere I can find those lesson you made 13 years ago? Thanks for your content!
Back when I first watched this I was a guitarist and I had yet to even touch any kind of bass. Now I’m a professional contrabass player in college learning this suite.
I'm new to bass, what is the plucking method you used?
A mixture of anything that seems appropriate at any given time. Sorry that won’t help you. I don’t believe in having a single technique for all situations. Sometimes three notes per string played middle-index-thumb.
I'm reading the book El baile del flamenco in which they preference this man as the guitarist giving credit for doting Solea!
Doting?
Wonderful little dance piece, Rob. I take it the machete was one of the forerunners of the ukulele when in was brought to Hawai'i in 1879. BTW, is there ANY plucked instrument on earth that you DON'T play? LOL
I believe it was. Portuguese. It’s easier to play similar instruments that are plucked with fingers or struck with a plectrum. You just have to figure out the tuning, then get to work. 😎
Beautiful.
thats nice, i wouldnt mind one.
Great sound! I am wondering how you’re achieving to avoid the unwanted sound of friction. I use moisture cream, but after a few min. I have to apply it again 😀
What friction?
@@RobMacKillop1 Friction of the skin and strings. For this reason I have problems to play gut strings, because it’s very hard for me to reach conditions in which my skin would produce good sound without the annoying sound which occurs while strumming.
@@adamvalach8815Strumming? How often do you see me strumming? Only on a baroque guitar, I think. I avoid finger squeak by lifting my fingers at 90% to the string. It doesn’t always work, but it is something I’ve definitely worked on.
@@RobMacKillop1 thank you for reply :). I guess you mean 90 degrees, right? Thank you for advice. By strumming I meant just playing with fingers, sorry for incorrect word.
Finger squeak is that problem I am talking about :).
Is this a high tension set that you are using
I don’t know. I use other strings, and was just trying these once. I prefer gut.
Thank you
I had no idea there were so many different types of banjos, and ways to play them! Thanks for sharing.
Rob, I'm a beginning guitarist without a teacher and just recently discovered your videos. You are truly inspirational. I love your playing, and the way you teach through your videos has helped me in a number of ways. Perhaps most importantly, as I'm working my way through very basic scales, exercises, and the simplest etudes and other compositions, all at a sometimes painfully slow tempo, you've helped me understand that even these things can be played beautifully. That has added immensely to my enjoyment of this process and so to my motivation to stay with it. No doubt it is also making me a better musician.
Good to know, so, many thanks for your comment. The guitar needs more poets, not more gymnasts. Best wishes, Rob.
Really beautiful, thankyou! How is the guitar tuning?
I like to play with no nails because the sound of the guitar depends more on my intention than on the shape of the nails.
I got the book and hope to start working through it soon. I hope you'll add more videos of performances of pieces in the book. It's great material and expertly presented.
Cheers, Joe. Best wishes for your musical progress! Remember to download all the soundfiles. They will help you with phrasing, which is very important. Rob
Great performance!! Beautiful! Where did you buy the lute? Thank you
Someone was selling it on The Lute Society website. Made by Martin Shepherd of the LuteShop website.
When I'm sad, I watch your music and talking videos. You give off really warm and homey vibes. Also inspire me to continue learning guitar even if it's hard sometimes. Thank you, Mr MacKillop. Btw Love your website.
Cheers, mate. Warm and homey is fine by me! 😎
I had an opportunity to buy one of these a few weeks back and I waffled… someone else bought it. The price was extremely reasonable. At the time, I forgot that there was an embargo on Russian goods. I hadn’t heard of them before. I really wish I had bought it. Hopefully, another one comes up soon.
The scales have fallen from my eyes (rather than my fingers). I was playing fast and straight with no vibrato.
Extraordinary sounds!
Cheers, Ray. Glad you like it!
Nice music, very good Rob, greetings.
Cheers, Ramon!
As always Rob a beautiful piece played beautifully. An amazing instrument !! I hope you're keeping well. Best wishes Sean
Thanks, Sean. Glad you like it. I’m well, thanks, just recovering from a house move! Best wishes to you, Rob
Hello from France. I'm currently studying this great book. I have one specific question about this harmonized minor scale. I can't figure out what triad is used to harmonize the 4th degree (g). It seems like it's a G° triad but there is no G° triad in the d minor scale. So where does it come from? I could just play the exercices but I would also like to understand the logic behind the harmonic choices made by Van Eps. Thank you for your chanel it helps a lot with this material.
Muito bom parabéns
Obrigada 👍
